Why do I have to register with VolCan?

We need to have your contact details and some statistics before we can refer you. This information will be kept confidential.

What is voluntary work?

Voluntary work is done of your own free will, unpaid, for the common good. Although it is unpaid, agreed expenses may be reimbursed. A Maori definition is 'Aroha ki te takata a rohe'.

You will be given full details of the position/s you've chosen. Your next step is to contact the organisation involved and arrange to meet with them.

Can visitors to New Zealand volunteer?

Yes, if your English can be easily understood over the phone. Usually you will need to be in Christchurch for at least six months.

I'm under sixteen, can I volunteer?

Yes. Volunteering Canterbury has a small number of positions for under sixteens. To apply you need written consent from your parent/caregiver.

You may also be able to find voluntary work through:

  • Guides/Scouts
  • Boys'/Girls' Brigade
  • St John Cadets
  • Rest Homes

Can I be a volunteer elsewhere in New Zealand?

Yes. Contact the nearest volunteer centre to the place you want to volunteer.

For a position with accommodation supplied you may want to become a WWOOFer (Willing Worker on an Organic Farm)
